Structure and Operating Principle of Hysteresis Clutch & Brake

1. Structure
A hysteresis clutch consists of three core components: stator, primary rotor, and secondary rotor. The stator houses an excitation coil, while the primary rotor integrates inner and outer magnetic poles. A cup-shaped unmagnetized permanent magnet (part of the secondary rotor) is inserted between these magnetic poles.

2. Operating Principle
When the primary rotor rotates and the excitation coil is energized, a rotating magnetic field is generated in the air gap formed by the inner and outer magnetic poles of the primary rotor. The secondary rotor’s permanent magnet located in this gap becomes magnetized. Due to the hysteresis characteristic of the permanent magnet, its polarity change lags behind that of the primary rotor’s magnetic poles—this magnetic coupling enables torque transmission between the primary and secondary rotors.A hysteresis brake is constructed by fixing the stator and primary rotor (integrated as a stationary assembly).
